What is a Sports massage?
Sports massage is a results-driven form of massage, during which a trained therapist uses their hands and forearms to deliver a deep therapeutic treatment to the body’s soft tissues. Techniques used during this service may include kneading effleurage, myofascial release, and deep tissue massage.
Though commonly used on a regular basis by athletes to tackle existing aches and pains whilst preventing future injury, sports massage is open to all – helping release tension in the muscles, fight chronic pain, encourage healing via improved circulation, and increase range of movement – benefits useful in all areas of life, from the gym to the office.
How much is sports massage?
The price of sports massage varies quite significantly across the massage and healing industry. This is often in line with the provider selected, your chosen location, and the length of your treatment. Average prices in the UK vary from £50 to £75.
At Lana’s Holistic Centre, we provide a bespoke, 60-minute sports massage for £60. To view our full list of treatments and accompanying prices, please visit our free online booking form.
How do you prepare for a sports massage?
Preparing for your sports massage in advance is one of the best ways to ensure your appointment is worthwhile. Before even booking your appointment, our experts recommend that you take the time to research massage centres and ensure your chosen provider is equipped with the right skills, knowledge, experience, and attitude to deliver the results you seek. Accreditation may be useful to ask about at this step.
On the day of your massage itself, we suggest ensuring that you’ve remembered to drink water – as the medium to high-pressure massage techniques used throughout a sports treatment can release enough fluid from the muscle tissue to cause slight dehydration and cramping.
Before leaving, be sure to change into a simple, loose-fitting outfit with outer garments that are easy to remove/put on. This ensures your comfort pre, during, and post-session – helping your therapist access target areas with relative ease.
What do they do in a sports massage
Sports massage is an intense experience, throughout which your therapist uses their hands and forearms to manipulate and deliver deep pressure to your body’s soft tissues – aiming to give relief to pain points identified during an initial consultation.
Unlike massages focusing entirely on relaxation, sports massage is results-driven, meaning that the specialist delivering it will likely work just below your pain threshold – sacrificing complete comfort in exchange for the release of tension, encouragement of healing, and improvement of motion.
The exact techniques used may vary, sports massage therapists may employ, myofascial, trigger point, soft tissue, and deep tissue work.
Do you take your clothes off for a sports massage?
In most cases, your sports massage therapist will advise you to dress down to whichever layer you feel most comfortable in – most often be a pair of loose-fitting shorts or flexible leggings and a tank top or t-shirt. All they’ll need is access to the necessary muscles to perform their treatment.
At Lana’s Holistic Centre, our massage therapists aim to create an environment of complete comfort. During your consultation, we’ll work to determine which areas of the body require the most focus, and can advise you in advance on what to wear to your appointment in accordance with this.
